Homemade Basics: BBQ Sauce

We have had an amazing weekend with some awesome weather.  The weather was so nice we dusted off the grill and made baby back ribs with this amazing BBQ sauce.  I have been making my own BBQ sauce for a long time now and this is my all-time favorite recipe and I wanted to make sure I shared it with you before grilling season gets in full swing.  This sauce is both sweet and tangy with a subtle smokey flavor and I have used with just about anything and it always pairs perfectly.  Now go dust off those grills and get to cooking!

Ingredients
  1. 1 small onion, finely diced
  2. 1 clove garlic, minced
  3. 2 cups ketchup
  4. 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  5. 1/4 cup molasses
  6. 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar
  7. 1 tbsp. dry mustard
  8. 1 tsp. cumin
  9. 1 tsp. smoked paprika
  10. 1 tsp. garlic powder
  11. 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  12. 1 tbsp. fresh thyme
  13. Salt and pepper to taste
  14. Extra-virgin olive oil
Instructions
  1. In a small sauce pan on medium-heat add the extra-virgin olive oil, onions and garlic. Sautee for 4-5 minutes until onions and garlic are tender. Add all the remaining ingredients and stir until combined. Bring the mixture to a bubble and turn the heat down to low. Simmer the sauce for 30 minutes to let the flavors come together. Sauce can be used immediately. Cool completely before storing. Refrigerate any remaining sauce in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
